Nepal’s peak electricity demand hits 1,813MW on Laxmi Puja evening

Peak electricity demand on the national grid reached 1,813 megawatts on the evening of Laxmi Puja this year, exceeding the Nepal Electricity Authority’s forecast of around 1,700MW by 113MW. According to data from the authority’s Load Dispatch Centre, total peak load on the system reached 2,400.30MW that evening.

Peak electricity demand in the Kathmandu Valley stood at around 489.50MW, the centre said. Despite the sharp rise in domestic demand, electricity supply remained smooth and uninterrupted, thanks to sufficient domestic generation.

Of the total 2,400.30MW available in the system, domestic consumption accounted for 1,813MW, while the surplus 587.30MW was exported to the Indian market, the authority said. The authority said there were no disruptions or instances of tripping during peak hours and that electricity supply remained fully operational across the country.
