James Talarico becomes first Democrat to win Texas Senate seat since 1988

Americans are electing members of Congress, which is made up of the House of Representatives and the Senate. All 435 House seats are up for election. In the Senate, only 35 of 100 seats are being contested because senators serve six-year terms.

This results tracker shows both the races being decided now and the 65 seats that are not up for election this year - 34 held by Democrats and 31 by Republicans. Democrat James Talarico has won a key Senate race in Texas, in what is one of the biggest upsets for Republicans in this year's elections. Talarico, a former schoolteacher, was a little-known figure until last year.

He made the rising cost of living under Republican leadership a central theme of his run. Paxton sought to portray Talarico's views as too progressive for the state, and campaigned alongside Trump on several occasions.
