Hong Kong democracy activist Joshua Wong sentenced to 10 more years

Joshua Wong, once a teen activist and one of the faces of the "Umbrella Movement," is spending most of his adult life so far in prison. Prominent Hong Kong pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong was sentenced on Thursday to 10 more years in prison on a charge of collusion with foreign powers, under the city's China-imposed national security law .

The 30-year-old, who is already serving a nearly five-year jail term for "subversion" under the controversial national security law, was expected to be freed in January next year. Wong was charged with conspiring with self-exiled activist Nathan Law and others to ask foreign countries, bodies, or individuals outside China to sanction or engage in other activities against the government.

Wong pleaded guilty to the offense in September — a move that can typically reduce the sentence — but he has also stated that he never advocated for independence for Hong Kong or sought regime change in China. "The punishment must fit the gravity of the crime," High Court Judge William Tam said while delivering the sentence Thursday.
