COIMBATORE On the eve of Deepavali, sweet and savoury outlets in Coimbatore city saw brisk business. Sweet melas across the city, gift packs of various types of sweets, savouries packed in different quantities, and assortments of sweets and savouries vied for customer attention over the past week. Sales picked up over the past 4-5 days and most brands achieved what they had targetted, say major retailers in the city. “It is a budget-based Deepavali.
If a customer purchased a kg of sweets for ₹1,000 last year, he did not buy a kg this year. Instead, they bought sweets for ₹1,000. This is because the prices have increased by a minimum 15%-20%. Yet, the demand was so good that we were able to meet only 80% of it,” said a major sweet maker in the city, who did not wish to be named.
There is no predictable trend is sweet sales. Corporates and bulk buyers who placed orders earlier all collected the packs over the past week. Retail sales continued till late on Saturday evening.
